A Word from the Director
by Sue Ellen Nelsen
Some of you may remember The Twilight Zone,
an American weekly television program. Each episode was a
mixture of fantasy and science fiction, usually with an unexpected
ending. Although this is a British play set in the industrial
town of Brumley in 1912, JB Priestleys An Inspector
Calls has many of the same elements of that series.
The characters are wonderful and fully drawn.
The Birling family represent the upper class and its predisposition
to be self-involved and neglectful of the lower classes. But
there is a division between the generations, with hope for
change expressed by the young adults. Edna, their maid, is
representative of the lower class.
