Dont let the title scare you! Urinetown
the Musical is one of the funniest and most unconventional
theatre pieces ever written. You will chuckle, laugh, and
roar at the bizarre situations, the zany characters and the
off-the wall humor.
The playwright came up with the absurd premise of the show
while on a tightly budgeted student trip to Europe. He found
himself digging into his pockets to find coins for the pay
toilets he encountered. Thus was born Urinetown, a place where
there is such a shortage of water that private toilets are
outlawed. The Urine Good Company strictly enforces this law
when desperation drives some to pee in the bushes. The poor,
who must use the filthiest urinal in town, finally rebel and
the outcome is well... unexpected, to say the least.
This award winning musical (three Tony awards, two Drama League
awards, three Outer Critics Circle awards and others too numerous
to mention) pokes fun at capitalism, corporate mismanagement,
small town politics, and even other musicals (West Side
Story, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof,
and Les Miserables). With a book by Greg Kotis and
music and lyrics by Mark Hoomann, this satire incorporates
boy-meet-girl romance, an evil corporate mogul, a cop who
breaks the forth wall, and every dribble of humor that they
could dream up. It even spoofs the structure of musical comedy
in general, and Urinetown the Musical in particular.
This dynamic, wacky show survived a Broadway opening three
days after the September 11th World Trade Center disaster
in 2001. It ran until 2004 and has since been touring the
country and playing at regional and community theatres all
over the world.
Here at the Douglas Morrisson Theatre we have a fabulous set
designed by the brilliant Kim Tolman, imaginative costumes
by the talented John Lewis and a superb artistic staff including
Director Sue Ellen Nelsen, Choreographer Faith Blevins, Vocal
Director Marianna Wolff, and Music Director Michael Strelo-Smith.
Urinetown the Musical is ridiculous, utterly unique,
and just plain fun. Give it a chance. You will never use a
bathroom again without thinking about this extraordinary show.
